Reading instruction that works is phonics-based and systematic. Here is one resource that provides teachers and parents both in an easy to use format.

Phonics Pathways, Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling [2005, Jossey-Bass Publishing] and Reading Pathways, Simple Exercises to Improve Reading Fluency [2007, Jossey-Bass Publishing] by Dolores Hiskes provide parents and teachers with a comprehensive, systematic approach to teaching phonics and improving fluency.

Phonics Pathways Lays Reading Foundation

Phonics Pathways is an easy to use book that will provide every student a great foundation to reading. The introduction provides clear understanding of the research behind the phonics-based reading instruction approach so that teachers and parents alike have an excellent understanding of the purpose behind starting or supplementing with a phonics program.

The lessons incorporate games and writing exercises designed to help students practice each skill and improve writing and spelling skills at the same time. Encouraging sayings are included throughout with the use of Dewey the Bookworm, a unique character who helps students of all ages keep going and feel good about learning to read.

Students can be easily placed in this book for remedial work through the use of the reviews after each concept. This book is designed in a way that makes it easy to use after school, at school or at a homeschool setting. Parents and teachers alike can easily use this reading program.

Reading Pathways Provides Fluency Practice

Reading Pathways provides educators a great additional resource for improving reading fluency. This book provides unique exercises and drills for early readers who already know all of the sounds. This fluency book is nice because it can be added to any reading program, not just Phonics Pathways.

The approach in Reading Pathways is unique as it systematically allows the student to progress each day. Through the use of reading pyramids, students learn to blend sounds together into words and read smoothly and efficiently.

Reading Pathways has simple instructions and is easy to use. It can be effectively used at home after school or as part of a home-school curriculum. Classroom teachers will find this a helpful tool as well for those students who need a little extra practice with their fluency. Similar to Phonics Pathways, Dewey the Bookworm visits readers throughout the book with lots of encouragement.

While Phonics Pathways and Reading Pathways are excellent tools for teaching reading, they need to be supplemented with books at the student’s reading level. This will enable students to put to practice the skills they are learning. Even so, these books are solid resources that anyone who is learning to read will benefit from.
