One of the best ways to keep your students interested is to incorporate holidays and special monthly events into your lesson or homeschooling plans. This is especially important when creating elementary lesson plans. There are many holidays and monthly events that fit nicely into the school curriculum. But where do you find out about those more “offbeat” and interesting days, weeks and months? Here is a tour of some important yearly holidays - not just the “typical” ones such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day or the Fourth of July – but the weekly and monthly celebrations that occur throughout the months of January to June. See Holiday Lesson Ideas July-December for more. JanuaryJanuary, the first month of the year, may not have many month-long celebrations, but it does have its share of special days. January has Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, Winnie the Pooh Day, Australia Day, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birthday. It also has National Hugging Day, Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day and Backwards Day. FebruaryFebruary is the shortest month, but it is packed with special days. Besides Groundhog Day on Feb. 2, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents’ Day, February is also Black History Month, Children’s Vision Month and Wild Bird Feeding Month. And when February is 29 days long we celebrate Leap Year Day. MarchOn March 2, we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day. March is also National Craft Month, Music in our Schools Month, and Women’s History Month. On March 17 we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, but the whole month is Irish American Heritage Month. AprilOf course, April 1 is April Fool’s Day, but April has its share of special days. April is National Mathematics Education Month and National Kite Month. Paul Revere took his famous ride on April 18, 1775 and San Francisco Had its infamous earthquake on the same day in 1906. We also note Holocaust Remembrance Day, National Week of the Ocean, and Earth Day in April. MayIn May we celebrate Hurricane Awareness Week, Spelling Bee Week, Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day. And don’t forget Mother’s Day and Armed Forces Day! JuneJune marks the official start of summer! It is also Fireworks Safety Month and Sun Safety Week. We celebrate Father’s Day in June along with World Juggling Day, Flag Day and the official start of the hurricane season. Keep your students interested by incorporating holidays and special monthly events into your lesson or homeschooling plans. All of these days, weeks and months are readily searchable. Look for calendars of monthly events to add some variety to your lesson plans.
