Using Monthly Holidays in Your Classroom, July to December

Do you use monthly holidays in your lesson plans? Here's an continuing overview of "holidays" from July to December.

Keep your students interested by incorporating holidays and special monthly events into your lesson or homeschooling plans. Our tour of some important weekly and monthly holidays and celebrations continues for the months of July through December. See Holiday Lesson Ideas: January-June for more.

July

July is a summer month in the northern hemisphere and many of its celebrations center on summer fun. July is National Hot Dog Month, National Ice Cream Month, Recreation and Parks Month and National Baked Beans Month. In July we celebrate the 4th of July, Moon Day celebrating Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon, and J.K. Rowling's Birthday.

August

August is National Inventor's Month, Get Ready for Kindergarten Month and Children's Eye Health and Safety Month according to Prevent Blindness America. In August we celebrate National Smile Week, National Friendship Week and Clown Week. Famous birthdays in August include Francis Scott Key, Davey Crockett, Wilbur and Orville Wright, and William Clark.

September

September is a jam-packed month, with many celebrations and events. Many schools start in September, so adding these celebrations to your lessons is a great way to get the new school year started right. September is Library Card Signup Month, National Sewing Month, National School Success Month, and Home and Sports Eye Safety Month. Special weeks in September include National Dog Week, Constitution Week, and Sobriety Checkpoint Week. In addition, we celebrate the first day of fall during September along with National Punctuation Day, National Play-Doh Day and author Roald Dahl's Birthday.

October

October is a busy month with many celebrations and special days. October is Month of the Dinosaur, National Stamp Collecting Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Halloween Safety Month, Youth Against Tobacco Month and National Book Month. Special weeks in October include Walk a Child to School Week, Fire Prevention Week, Teen Read Week and School Lunch Week. And of course, Halloween!

November

November is Native American Month and Aviation History Month. During November we celebrate American Education Week, National Children's Book Week, and Geography Awareness Week. Marie Curie, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Mark Twain have November birthdays. We celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States in November, too.

December

December is the last month of the year, but it has its share of special days. Of course, December is most famous for Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, but here are some other ways to celebrate in December. December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month, International Calendar Awareness Month and National Stress-Free Family Holiday Month. Famous December birthdays include Walt Disney, Ira Gershwin, and Emily Dickinson.

There you have it – a tour of the yearly celebrations. Of course, this is just a small list compared to the many monthly, weekly and daily celebrations during the year.
