Math Games for Elementary School

Help Reinforce and Extend Concepts in Math

© Elizabeth Pace

Games are a useful teaching tool both in the classroom and at home to practice math skills. These are a few fun ones for a variety of elementary school ages.

Dazzling Dominoes:

The purpose of this game is to help with learning how to find co-ordinates on a grid.

For this game you will need a grid of 6 squares by 6 squares and a set of dominoes. Place all the dominoes face down on the table in front of the players. The players take turns to pick up a domino and look at the two numbers shown on it. For example, you might pick up a 2:4 tile. On the grid put an "x" in the second row down and fourth row across. The lowest number is always placed in the down column. The object of the game is to try to get three "x"'s in a row. If you happen to pick up a domino that is blank then you must miss a turn

Adding in the Window

The purpose of the game is to practice addition skills

Have a grid 4 squares by 4 squares. Fill in the squares with random single digit numbers. Create a "window" out of card that will show only two adjacent squares at a time. Place the window over the grid, write down the two numbers that are shown and add them together. See how many totals you can make

Extensions:

  • Set challenges such as "is it possible to make a total of 14?", "What totals are not possible?", "How many different windows give a total of 9?".
  • Try with a different arrangement of numbers
  • Try with a different shaped window, ie: 3 squares shown at a time.
  • Try finding differences instead of sums.

Card Multiplication:

The purpose of this game is to practice and speed of multiplication fluency

Have a deck of cards with the Jacks, Queens and Kings removed. Find a card with the number of the multiplication table you want to practice ie: 8. Place it in front of you. Deal the rest of the cards one by one beside the one you have picked out. As you deal them out multiply them with the one on the table Try to go through as quickly as you can without having to pause too long on each card.

Extension:

  • If you want to make the game a little harder, keep the face cards in with Jacks representing 11, Queens representing 12 and King's representing 13.
  • If you don't want to test a single number just deal two cards a multiply them. Then draw two more, etc.

Multiplication Tic Tac Toe

The purpose of this game is to practice fluency of basic multiplication facts

Create a tic tac toe board (a 3 x 3 grid). In each box write the answers to the 7 times table in random order. To cover a space on the board the student must say the basic fact associated with that answer. If they answer wrong or take too long in answering then the turn passes to the other player. This game can be used for each of the times tables.

Extension:

  • Reverse it and make it for division. For example: If the answers on the board are the 7 table then say "the number in the box (ie" 35) divided by 7 = ?"
