Maine may be a small state, but the citizens here do know how to party. The 2007 Portland Muggle Fest is coming, and I can hardly wait to experience the magic.
The thirteen hour celebration will begin at noon on Friday, July 2oth in the warehouses of the Portland Company Complex in Portland, Maine. Harry Potter fans will dress in their best wizarding attire so that they can abandon their "muggle cars" and ride the Knight Bus and the Hogwarts Express to JK Rowling's wizarding London.
Slytherin snakes(does anyone speak Parseltongue?) from Reziel the Reptileologist, postal owls from Chewonkee , Defense Against the Dark Arts Demonstrations from Aikido of Maine, and a magic show by Peter Boie are just some of the planned events. There will also be a Wizard Look-Alike Contest and a chance to test wizarding knowledge at the Muggle Games.
Many Portland, Maine, business will, for this night only, also be apart of Diagon Alley. Florean Fortescue's (Smiling Hill) Ice Cream, Olivander's Makers of Fine Wands (GLSEN), St. Mungos Hospital for Magical Maladies and Illnesses (Barbara Bush Children's Hospital), Honeydukes Sweetshop (Old Port Candy Company), The Leaky Cauldron (Bull Feeny's), and, yes, even representatives from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (Breakwater School) will attend. I recommend avoiding the earthworm and ear wax flavored Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans
The celebration will end with the Hogwarts Yule Ball which will lead right up to the moment when, at 12:01 AM Books, Etc. will distribute copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to those who have pre-purchased the book.
Minister of Magic Kirsten Cappy (Curious City) and her committee, commissioned by Youth and Family Outreach have thought of just about everything. It will be a day and night to remember.
Tickets for Mugglefest can be purchased for $12/person online or at Portland or Falmouth locations of Books, Etc.
