I think that parental supervision is key. Kids are far less likely to be "sucked in" by predators if they know that their parents may monitor IM'ing and discussion boards.

- Cyber Safety in the Classroom
Hi,
For the past three years, I have championed online safety education and awareness in my elementary school and entire region.
As Regional Office of Education's Internet Safety Coordinator, I have taught over 750 children personalized online safety lessons, created presentations for parents and educators, write a regular newspaper column, and put together an award winning educational resource blog. I also assembled a team of community leaders, including law enforcement officals.
Internet safety should be mandated in all public schools in this country, as it is in other countries. Online safety needs to be ongoing, not a one-time lesson. As technology is rapidly changing, it is very important we are up-to-date with the potential risks our kids may face online. Frankly, many parents and teachers simply do not have the time to keep up with the growing technology. Some adults feel children are more computer savvy than they are.
We all need to work together in order to keep our children safer online; parents, teachers, law enforcement and children.
If you are looking for a wide array of online safety resources, please visit my website for information. What began three years ago as a hobby or interest, has become my fulltime job and passion.
