Wow, this is just way too scary! Why should the state have any rights in this matter. This should be squarely in the parental camp.

The mission of the education system is to educate (hence the name), not to provide contraceptives to children. Yes, a certain number of teen pregnancies are going to happen. This doesn't give schools license to nose in.

» cdietzius - A pill to fix bigger problems

As my son hands me his recent vocabulary quiz and orchestra practice log to sign so that his teachers know that I am aware of his grades I ask my two tween boys if they felt it necessary for contraceptives to be given out without parental consent in middle school. They both said absolutely not. I have openly discussed with my boys the issues of sex telling them that the responsibility of pregnancy should obviously be a concern but there are even bigger problems to worry about. Dolling out the pill subjects a girl and boy to cancer, life threatening STDs and sterility. And let's not dismiss the psychological aspect of a likely broken heart after the likely "love em and leave em" episode. Last I checked a woman is required to have a thorough gynecological exam to be prescribed the birth control pill. Is our public school system going to hire a gynecologist to service our tweens? Wonder whose insurance is going to pay for this or is this going to be government subsidized socialized medicine in our schools? A pill to fix all of our problems I guess is a lot easier than trusting a parent to parent. Encourage your boys to treat their girlfriend the way they hope their future life partner is being treated by someone else!
